If you are going on a beach at night and you can only buy one thing, buy lugworm. Add squid or a block of frozen mackerel if you can carry two. If you are fishing mixed ground or an estuary for bass, ragworm or peeler (when it is actually in) is the better first bag. Do not buy six baits for a first session.

What bait should a beginner buy?

How much bait do I need?More than you think, less than a bucket. A couple of hours on a flapper will empty a small box of lug if the whiting are in. Take spare. Frozen backup in the bag is insurance, not a plan to thaw the lot before you start.

Fresh vs frozen baitFresh worm and peeler usually outfish frozen. Frozen squid, mackerel and sandeel are normal and catch plenty of fish. Frozen worm is a backup. Frozen peeler is second-best. A brown sloppy thaw is not the same bait as a blast-frozen packet.

How do I keep bait fresh?Cool, out of the sun, not in a sealed bag of warm water. Worms like a fridge box or newspaper. Peelers like damp and air. Fish baits stay frozen until you cut them. If it smells wrong and has gone to liquid, it is not a secret weapon.

How do I transport bait?A cool bag. Not the dashboard. Not the boot in July without a block of ice. Cut fish bait at the mark if you can, so the rest stays frozen. Availability varies by local tackle shop and season. This app does not know what is in stock today.

What is bait elastic?A thin stretchy wrap that holds a soft bait on the hook for the cast. Crab, mussel, cockle, a bunch of worm, a herring side — they all fly off without it. It is not a substitute for a hook point that can still prick.

How do I use bait elastic?A few wraps around the bait, not a cocoon. Stop when the bait will survive the punch and the hook point is still clear. Too much elastic is a plastic parcel the fish cannot hook on.

How do I prepare lugworm?Keep them cool. Thread so the hook is mostly hidden and the tail can still move. A single worm for dabs; a bunch, bound if you need the extra, for bigger fish. Blow lug is softer; black lug is tougher for distance. Same family.

How do I prepare ragworm?Hook once through the head so it wriggles. A whole king rag for bass; a small harbour rag for flats. They go off faster than lug — a grey limp rag is finished.

How do I use squid?Thaw what you need. Thin strips for whiting; thicker for dogs and codling; a wrap over fish on a Pennel for rays and conger. It is the bait that survives a long chuck.

How do I use mackerel?Cut from frozen. Thin strips, a side on a Pennel, or a wrap. Oily belly for scent. It is a poor plaice bait and a good dog, ray and conger bait.

How do I use crab?Peeler: peel it, bind it, Pennel it. Half for wrasse, a whole for a hound or a decent bass. Hardback: crush or hook the edge, bind it, fish it in the kelp. Hardback is not peeler for bass. Check local rules, access restrictions and protected areas before collecting bait.

How do I make a bait cocktail?Two baits on one hook because they do different jobs — squid wrap over lug, mackerel over squid, mussel with worm. Change one thing at a time. A cocktail is not a lucky dip of everything in the bag.
